Fred Alvarado is an Oakland based artist who has participated in mural work and exhibitions around California. He is an interdisciplinary artist who reflects and collaborates with communities in creating art. His work investigates sites through the creation of parallel narratives. These stories flirt with what potentials could be reached, those that have been, and those that could have been. His art work looms in imaginary scenarios of a future humanity concerned with understanding the potential threats and strengths of its own nature. The objects, conversations, and documentation that come from this artivism become a form of radical science fiction portrayed in murals, videos, photography, and writings.
Fred says, “The design is an image of the cycle of a butterfly from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly as it reminds me of the process which growth takes. I added the word Nayeli, which means ‘I love you’ in Zapotec. It is also the name of my young niece who is the fiercest person I know. I wanted to help inspire hope and happiness as she battles through cancer.”
