Josh Katz is a painter and mural artist based out of Oakland, California. His artwork incorporates geometric patterning and floral imagery which he renders using vibrant spray painted color palettes. Josh’s murals can be found in the Castro and Hunter’s Point neighborhoods in San Francisco and Jack London Square in Oakland. As a member of the LGBTQ community, his most recent works have begun to explore themes of queerness, activism, and the resilience of the queer community. Currently, he is working on incorporating these themes into his mural productions to bring his queer imagery into the streets and onto city walls.
Josh says of his piece, We Will Rise, “I am using a rainbow background to speak to the city’s LGBT community. I am also using a pink triangle which is a symbol of hope in the gay community to which I belong. Finally, centered in the triangle there is a black and white rose. The rose is a symbol of strength and resilience which I believe suits the theme of ‘hope.’ The combination of the rainbow background, the pink triangle, and the rose is a nod to the resilience of the diverse communities which make up San Francisco. I think this imagery is especially relevant and inspiring given the challenging times that we are facing with COVID-19.”
